New Consultants Advisory Group

The New Consultants Advisory Group originated in summer 2023. The Advisory Group is comprised of early career consultants in their first five years of appointment and final year registrars, with representation from across the UK, plus a chair, who is also a Deputy Chair of Training Committee, the current Chair of the BSG Training Section and the current Chair of the SWiG Section. Please find Group Terms of Reference. The NCAG contains seats for 19 regional representatives, co-opted members, chair. Members meet online two to three times a year.

BSG is hoping to develop useful resources, including toolkits and webinars that new consultants can access and freely use to support the transition from training into consultant life. The Advisory Group is here to initiate it and guide what is most needed on the ground.

In early July 2023 we organised a first meeting under the banner of Training Committee and Trainees Section to offer blue sky thinking about initial offer/ideas. Some of the focus areas identified by the group are:

  • Job planning
  • Transition from trainee to supporting trainees
  • Survival tips for new consultants
  • Appraisals
  • Complaints and complications
  • Pensions
  • What should I agree to? What should I not agree to?
  • Being a parent to young kids as a new consultant
  • F2F Medical Leadership course with networking opportunities

New CCT Awardees on Career Progression - BSG Survey

Less than a third of newly awarded gastroenterology CCT holders who responded to the Royal College of Physicians 2023 and 2024 post-CCT surveys applied for a consultant post. This is in stark contrast to the 75% of respondents across all medical specialties who applied for a consultant post. This survey aims to identify the factors contributing to this so that gastroenterology trainees nearing their CCT can be better supported in achieving their desired career progression. Please kindly complete this anonymous survey endorsed by the BSG New Consultants Advisory Group which takes less than 3 minutes to complete.
