As we continue to restart our service provision after the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the issues for the gastroenterology specialty will be the repercussions on endoscopy training following the introduction of the shape of training programme (the gastroenterology curriculum will start in 2021). The SpR training programme has now been reduced to 4 years. The aim is to focus on a comprehensive general gastroenterology training including endoscopy in the given timeframe.
To support our trainees the BSG Endoscopy committee are working to create a central database of all advanced endoscopy fellowships in the UK & Ireland to be hosted on the BSG website. This will enable the trainee to access information on a single portal and plan their future careers in endoscopy. There are fantastic comprehensive well-established fellowships around the country but few trainees have access to the information unless they are advertised in the BMJ jobs career or nhsjobs. This is less than ideal for the trainee to target their preferred fellowship.
In order to collate this, we have come up with a concise checklist for the fellowship below. There is an ability to attach a pdf and contact email address for trainees to access details of the fellowship. Once we receive the information, it will be available on the BSG website under the “jobs” section. The trainee will then be able to navigate the page as per the type of endoscopy i.e. OGD, colonoscopy, ERCP, small bowel or EUS. If the website runs smoothly we can add more filters to target a more specific fellowship e.g. combined ERCP/EUS fellowships, therapeutic gastroscopy/colonoscopy, etc.
