Mathew Vithayathil is a Specialist Registrar in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

What attracted you to a career in gastroenterology/hepatology?

I've always loved the variety within gastroenterology and hepatology. Everyday is different, with acute and chronic conditions, from the bedside to endoscopy. 

What advancement in gastroenterology/hepatology are you most excited about and why?

I'm fascinated about the new AI models which are being applied across all areas of gastroenterology and hepatology. These models have huge potential to improve patient care and being involved in this research is very exciting.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Every day is different! Seeing such a wide variety of patients and thinking of different ways to help them can be challenging, but it is very rewarding.

What is the one thing you would change?

More opportunities for clinicians to get exposed and involved in research!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career?

"Passion is the difference between a job and a career". Find the area which you enjoy the most and pursue this. 

What does being a BSG member mean to you?

Being part of the BSG network gives me the opportunity to meet so many fantastic clinicians and researchers and share experiences and new ideas.
