What attracted you to a career in gastroenterology/hepatology?
I’ve always been fascinated by how microbes cause disease so pursuing a research career in gastroenterology was my destiny. I just followed the bugs!
What advancement in gastroenterology/hepatology are you most excited about and why?
For me it is the embracing of new knowledge and technologies. New imaging modalities, incorporation of AI into clinical decision-making and the concept of changing disease management through microbial manipulation strategies.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love the variety of my work and the interaction with my colleagues, study participants/patients and my students. I also really value my international collaboration network and the opportunities to share knowledge.
What is the one thing you would change?
The lack of job security for researchers.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career?
You get out of your career what you put in!
What does being a BSG member mean to you?
Being a BSG member is being part of an exceptional organisation that supports excellence in gastroenterology and provides opportunities to enhance the specialty for the benefit of patients, clinicians and researchers.
