Introducing Gut Science - a fundamental and discovery science companion journal to Gut
We are excited to announce a new journal from BMJ Group and the British Society of Gastroenterology - Gut Science.
The launch of a new scientific journal is an auspicious moment, all the more so when it will sit alongside one of the world’s leading specialty journals. For 65 years, Gut has provided cutting-edge clinical research across the whole spectrum of gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and related specialties, building a reputation for quality and scientific excellence that is admired around the globe.
In 2010, Gut was joined by Frontline Gastroenterology, a journal for practitioners with an emphasis on educational and practice-based content to improve clinical skills and enhance patient care. Then in 2014, BMJ Open Gastroenterology (BMJOG) was launched to provide an open access home for sound science papers that contribute to the advancement of the field.
Gut Science will be the fourth journal in the Gut family, sharing Gut’s high editorial standards and commitment to quality, but with an exclusive focus purely on basic/fundamental and discovery science relating to the digestive tract. There are very few existing journals with this approach; although Gut does publish a number of outstanding basic science papers each year, it receives many more submissions than it can consider. BMJOG publishes occasional basic science papers and will continue to do so, but having a dedicated journal will drive up both the quality and volume of basic science submissions for the whole portfolio. The editors and editorial teams of all four journals will work closely and collaboratively, and authors will have the option for their paper to be transferred efficiently among the journals to find the right home and ensure a positive experience.
Gut Science will be a gold open access journal, ensuring that all content is available to the widest possible audience worldwide to read, download and share. Accepted papers will be published continuously online on the journal website as soon as they are ready, complemented by digital features such as infographics and video abstracts. The journal will promote the highest ethical standards, underpinned by BMJ Group’s rigorous policies, and seek to build a diverse and representative editorial board and team of reviewers.
To recognise the invaluable contribution that reviewers make towards the success of a journal, a 25% discount on the article processing charge (APC) will be offered when a reviewer submits a paper to the journal within 12 months of completing a review. Corresponding authors who are BSG members receive a 30% discount on the APC, and BSG trainee members receive a 50% discount.
We hope that researchers and scientists from all areas of gastrointestinal research will join us on this exciting journey and submit their best work for consideration.
We encourage members to sign up for e-alerts for the journal here.

Launch of new resource kit for members - making the case for clinical research
The RCP has launched a new resource kit for physicians ‘Making the case for research’. The kit is designed to help consultants and resident doctors make the case for why they should be able to undertake research and help them understand what they can do to get more involved.
Summer '24: BSG Research update
It is with great pleasure that I take over the helm as the first female and Academic Hepatologist Chair of the BSG Research Committee in June 2024. I would like to begin by sincerely thanking Shaji Sebastian for leading the Committee through a very challenging 2 years as UK Gastroenterology re-emerged from the covid pandemic.
