Aims of the Training

  1. Management of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding
  2. Basic polypectomy and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
  3. Basic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  4. Training Colonoscopy Trainers (TCT) course

Teaching Methods and Tools

  • Structured lectures
  • Animal model training
  • Hands-on endoscopy sessions
  • Live case demonstrations/ Training

 

Program Activities

Day 1 – Opening & Clinical Sessions

  • Opening ceremony attended by the hospital Clinical Director, gastroenterology faculty, fellows, residents, representatives from AFTAC, and the Egyptian Embassy.
  • Lectures delivered to an audience of ~30 participants, including 11 GI fellows and internal medicine residents.
  • Hands-on training: Fellows rotated between upper GI models, stomach PEG/polypectomy stations, and live diagnostic cases (upper and lower GI).

Day 2 – TCT Theory & Parallel Sessions

  • Lectures for ~30 participants (11 fellows + internal medicine residents).
  • TCT theory component:Seven Rwandan consultants participated. Sessions included:
    • Background, aims, and expectations.
    • Framework for endoscopy skills training.
    • Techniques in colonoscopy teaching.
  • Parallel fellow sessions: Live cases and ultrasound training delivered by AMAGE faculty.
  • Parallel ERCP therapeutic session

3 days activity  of complex ESCP procedures done by the group with use of EUS by Prof Dua.

Day 3 – TCT Practical Training

  • Practical TCT sessions with seven consultants.
  • Each consultant acted as a trainer, supervised by faculty, and received structured feedback from both trainees and faculty.
  • Delegates also practiced short (5-minute) open/close teaching sessions.
  • Evaluation tools:
    • Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) forms distributed.
    • Pre- and post-training questionnaires completed by both TCT delegates and GI fellows ( complete analysis report to follow).

 

Summary of Outcomes

  • Enhanced local capacity in GI bleeding management, polypectomy/EMR, ERCP, and colonoscopy teaching.
  • Successful delivery of TCT program to seven Rwandan consultants.
  • Hands-on and live training benefited 11 fellows and multiple internal medicine residents.
  • Strengthened institutional collaboration between BSG international committee, AMAGE, and Rwandan gastroenterology teams.
