Online
We are delighted to endorse the Online Upper GI/Small Bowel Capsule Reading Training Course, starting on 13 April 2026.
You may be a doctor or a specialist nurse wanting to become a certified capsule reader. You can do it in just 50 hours of training time. This is a web-based small bowel capsule reading course designed to train aspiring practitioners to perform and read full small bowel capsule studies reliably. The entire curriculum can be completed part time, from work or from home, and conforms to the standards recommended by European and American guidelines.
On registration, delegates will receive an interactive Web App that teaches patient preparation and image recognition of both the common and less common disorders of the oesophagus, stomach and small intestine. On completing the App based component, delegates attend a series of webinars and will be provided with access to a browser-based Capsule Reading Simulator, with a user interface identical to the Medtronic PillCam Rapid Reader V9 system, and a library of 20 full small bowel capsule videos on which to train. These full cases are graded in complexity – five easy formative cases, five moderate formative cases, five difficult formative cases, then five summative cases. After the introductory webinar, trainees will be asked to view and report on two full cases weekly. The reports will be uploaded to our Dashboard where our expert faculty will evaluate the reports and rapidly provide written feedback on each report. When appropriate, one-to-one online guidance will be provided. The criteria for a successful summative assessment carries the expectation that candidates recognise at least 90% of clinically significant pathology. On satisfactory completion of all twenty cases, a certificate of completion will be awarded recognising that the candidate has fulfilled the published training criteria.
This course is appropriate for GI consultants, colorectal surgeons and specialist trainees, as well as clinical nurse specialists with at least three years' experience in an endoscopy setting.
CPD Points: Approved by the Federation of the Royal College of Physicians UK for 30 external (category 1)
CPD Course Fee: £1,750. BSG members receive 30% discount on production of BSG membership number.
