BSG Endorsed Event: Manchester Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy Training Course for Healthcare Professionals

05-02-2026 @ 09:00 - 13-04-2026 @ 17:00

Hybrid

The Manchester Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy Training Course for Healthcare Professionals’ has been approved by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.

The Manchester Protocol, developed by Professor Peter Whorwell, is internationally recognised as the gold-standard approach to gut-directed hypnotherapy. The pioneering research evidence provided by Prof Whorwell and more recently Dr Dipesh Vasant has established hypnosis as an effective treatment for IBS and related disorders, forming the evidence base that secured its inclusion in the IBS NICE guidelines.

This four-day BSCAH (British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis) course is built around that protocol, offering healthcare professionals structured, evidence-based training in the practical application of Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy (GDH). With direct input from Professor Whorwell and Dr Vasant — who will contribute to the teaching and will also be present for the final face-to-face day for live Q&A — participants will gain unparalleled insight from the experts who created this world-leading approach.

The course provides a blended learning format, combining online study with in-person teaching, live demonstrations, and small-group practice. Delegates will develop the skills to:
  • Recognise when GDH is appropriate and apply it safely and ethically
  • Tailor hypnotic techniques to the needs of individual patients
  • Use imagery, language, suggestion, and self-hypnosis for IBS and functional gut disorders
  • Enhance patient trust, improve adherence, and support emotional regulation
  • Taught by an experienced multidisciplinary faculty, and reinforced with asynchronous learning materials, this course equips gastroenterology professionals with the tools and confidence to integrate the Manchester Protocol into everyday clinical practice — improving outcomes for patients while building practitioner resilience.
Who Should Attend: Healthcare professionals working in gastroenterology, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, and allied health professionals interested in enhancing patient care through adjunctive hypnosis.
