In Memoriam: Ian Forgacs 1951-2018

It is with great sadness that the Society received the information of the passing of our friend and colleague Dr Ian Forgacs, Past President of the BSG, on Wednesday 23rd October. We would like to express our sincere condolences to his wife Helen and family at this difficult time.

Ian was President from 2014 - 2016 and President Elect from 2012 - 2014. Ian was a popular President who was well known to the membership; he fostered good relationships with everyone he came into contact with and was notably encouraging to the Trainee Section. He handled the development of the SCE (now ESEGH) with skill and diplomacy and signed an MOU with the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology and favoured an outward looking internationally active BSG.

Ian was a great leader and a true advocate of team work. He had great vision on how to improve training and care for our patients. He also had a great sense of humour, and was always fun and hugely entertaining! Ian was a lover of the arts and left medicine to join RADA after demitting from his role as President in 2016. He famously declaimed Hamlet’s soliloquy at a BSG away day! He will be missed by the membership, staff and his colleagues; his passion for the BSG and for Gastroenterology will be his legacy.

The funeral will be private but a celebration of his life will be held at a memorial service at a later date. Details will be circulated when they become available.

Please send any personal messages of condolence to President@bsg.org.uk. We will collate all the messages and forward them to his wife, Helen.
