The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC)’s Senior Research Policy Manager, Andy Clempson, put together a list of the most common questions they’ve been asked about Excess Treatment Costs (ETCs). These costs are attributable to the extra cost of conducting clinical research rather than routine clinical care. A new system for determining and paying for ETCs is now in place in England (Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland continue with their usual systems for now). Under the new system, the payment of ETCs for all research studies is being managed by LCRNs on behalf of the local CCGs. Therefore all studies where CCGs are the responsible commissioner will move onto this new system. Further details are available in the FAQs and associated blog.
