The BSG Out Of Programme (OOP) Award is designed to help gastroenterology trainees access training opportunities not available as part of their training rotations.

In a special report recently published in Expert Review of Gastroenterology & Hepatology (http://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/hj4PkmEH8WdqbkVUXdsf/full), the 2016 recipient of this award, Dipesh Vasant and colleagues at Augusta University USA have described the training model observed during the OOP award at a centre of excellence in neurogastroenterology and motility (NGM). The article details the specifics and outcomes of an established one-month apprenticeship-based training programme in NGM, demonstrating how this programme develops core skills in evaluating and managing complex gastrointestinal motility disorders, and discusses how adoption of this model in other centres could significantly enhance learning, improve gastroenterology training, and fulfil unmet gaps in training curriculae.
