Taster Members

Taster membership is designed for junior doctors in the early years of their training (below ST3) and medical, nursing or scientific students. It gives you a taste of membership of the Society before committing to full Trainee membership.

As a taster member you can

  • Keep up to date with the latest clinically authoritative information, practices and research in gastroenterology and hepatology with online access to Open Gastroenterology from the members area.
  • Network and share ideas with your peers and learn from others in the field.
  • Save money with reduced registration fees at all BSG endorsed events,including nearly 90% off the annual conference fee.
  • Stay up to date with the latest news from the Gastroenterology communityand early awareness in change of practice and new research.
  • Participate in the Trainees Committee at CMT level.

Why choose a career in gastroenterology?

The role of a gastroenterologist is highly varied and this is owed to the fact that the specialty deals with a variety of organs. It involves the GI tract from the mouth to rectum as well as the hepatobiliary system. This variety means that you encounter a diverse patient demographic in your daily working schedule. 

Given the complexity of cases, there is a huge focus on drawing in quality and experience from the multidisciplinary team and gastroenterologists work closely with, surgeons, histopathologists, radiologists, pharmacists as well as specialist nurses. 

Endoscopy is a significant component of gastroenterology and introduces a practical therapeutic and diagnostic element to the specialty.

If you are interested in gastroenterology there are a number of courses and conferences you can attend to get a flavor of what the specialty entails. 

BSG Taster Course 

The BSG runs a taster course once a year, which provides an immersive experience to the field. The course runs over two days and will allow you to get hands-on endoscopic experience. You will also partake in MDT discussions regarding complex gastroenterology cases and will learn more about what a career in gastroenterology entails. For those of you who are still medical students, there are grants available to help cover the cost of the course. 

BSG Annual Meeting

The BSG also run an annual 4-day meeting. Over the four days there a variety of lectures and presentations on some of the most recent and groundbreaking research in the field of gastroenterology. To help make our annual meeting as accessible as possible we offer heavily subsidised registration rates for junior doctors and medical students.
