BSG members recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2022

The BSG is delighted to announce that a number of members have been recognised for their hard work in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2022.

Dr Andrew Goddard is awarded a knighthood for services to health and social care

Dr Goddard is president of Royal College of Physicians and consultant gastroenterologist. He will shortly complete his 4-year term as president but has held senior roles at the RCP for 20 years. He has continued working as a gastroenterologist at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton throughout his term as president, during which he has led the RCP’s 40,000 members through the most challenging times most will experience in their careers. Dr Goddard has played a significant role in helping to shape the NHS’s response to COVID-19, as well as being a powerful voice for all health care professionals involved.

Professor Fiona Powrie is appointed Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE), for services to Medical Science

Professor Powrie, is a professor of Musculoskeletal Sciences and Director of the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology. She has made major contributions to our understanding of how gut bacteria and the immune system interact, with applications in the management of inflammatory bowel disease. She has emerged as a scientific leader and inspirational role model for the many young women beginning careers in biomedical science.

Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to cancer

Professor Fitzgerald is the Director of the CRUK Cambridge Cancer Centre. She has led a team in the development of cytosponge testing to help diagnose Barrett’s Oesophagus, a condition that can sometimes develop into oesophageal cancer. Diagnostic tests on 9000 individuals with symptoms have already taken place.

Dr Umakant Ramchandra Dave is appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the NHS

Dr Dave is a consultant gastroenterologist at the Swansea Bay University Health Board, specialising in endoscopy. He also has a passion for developing others, supporting endoscopy training in Bangladesh, establishing new trainee awards for his health board and delivering mindfulness and wellbeing training for colleagues.
