POST: Hepatology Research Fellow – Research & Innovation
Hours: 40 hours per week (1.0 WTE)
Contract Type: Fixed term contract – 1 year initially
Clinical Research Fellow in Hepatology at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
Outstanding opportunity for an ambitious trainee Hepatologist or gastroenterologist to gain experience of delivering clinical research under the supervision of Dr Richard Aspinall.
The Portsmouth Liver Centre is one of the largest hepatology services in Southern England and includes 4 consultant hepatologists, 5 hepatology nurse specialists, 5 alcohol nurses, 2 research nurses, a specialist pharmacist and a clinical trials assistant. We provide the full range of non-surgical specialist liver care including a satellite transplant service (with the Royal Free London), antiviral therapy for Hepatitis B&C, complex second line PBC therapies, an award-winning alcohol care team and a pioneering NAFLD clinic. We have dedicated areas for ambulatory care (including nurse-led paracentesis) and a separate clinical area for research trials.
We have a strong track record of delivering studies in chronic liver disease including viral hepatitis, NAFLD, ARLD, PBC, autoimmune hepatitis, decompensated cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy.
In addition to training in research methodology, the successful applicant will be able to gain additional clinical exposure (depending on their interests) such as training in endoscopic management of varices or transient elastography (Fibroscan).
In addition to helping deliver NIHR portfolio studies, the research fellow will be supported to develop an investigator-led project subject to their interests and register for a higher degree. Potential projects are negotiable but existing opportunities include projects in alcohol-related illness, NAFLD/NASH, portal hypertension, renal dysfunction in cirrhosis and ongoing collaborations with public health colleagues.
