The curriculum aims to provide trainees with the skills to take the lead role in nutritional support but also care for patients in a level 3 or 4 IF/HPN unit. The posts are primarily aimed at trainees who will be entering ST6 in September, although entry at ST5 or ST7 is permissible.

The important principles underlying the care of patients needing interventional nutritional support will be delivered during the 12 month training posts:

  1. The underlying condition and its outcome
  2. Gastrointestinal and nutritional physiology
  3. Nutritional and fluid requirements and how they are determined
  4. The indications, contraindications and complications of enteral and parenteral feeding
  5. The definitions and causes of intestinal failure (IF) with an awareness of a patient's remaining gut anatomy
  6. The managements of patients with complex IBD

The advanced nutrition syllabus is on pages 105 – 119 of the 2010 Gastroenterology curriculum, which can be found on the JRCPTB website here.

There are 4 linked posts rotating through the national IF and transplant centres. It is encouraged that trainees rotate through both posts, but the centres are open to discussion if a trainee wishes to stay in one centre for 12 months. Posts are recruited nationally via Oriel and co-ordinated by Health Education London and all posts commence on the 1st Monday in September to co-ordinate with national rotations. Historically, applications have opened in early November, with a closing date in December and interviews in February.

Trainees are encouraged to ask the unit contacts below for further information, or alternatively If you would like information from previous nutrition ATP post holders please contact Howard Ellison ( who can forward your questions.
