GASTRO 2009, UEGW/WCOG: a historic event

For the first time in the history of gastroenterology, an international conference GASTRO 2009, UEGW/WCOG, London will bring together the forces of four pre-eminent organisations. The United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEGF) and the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO), together with the World Organisation of Digestive Endoscopy (OMED) and the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), are to jointly organise this landmark meeting in the exciting setting of the city of London.

This collaboration will ensure the perfect balance of basic science and clinical practice and will encompass all disciplines in gastroenterology (endoscopy, digestive oncology, nutrition, digestive surgery, hepatology, gastroenterology). Furthermore, it will guarantee that the conference is truly global in character.

Department of Health’s Hepatitis C Awareness Campaign

2009 will see the relaunch of the Department of Health’s hepatitis C awareness campaign to help improve the detection and diagnosis of the virus, as there is effective treatment available to prevent progression to serious liver disease.

Formerly called ‘Face It’, the new campaign will place a greater focus on reaching groups at increased risk of infection, such as former dependent or non-dependent intravenous drug users and people from a South Asian background, following in-depth research on these audience groups.

UEGF Research Prize 2009.

The prize will be presented during the plenary session of the UEGW/WCOG GASTRO 2009 meeting in London to a researcher that has achieved international excellence and recognition for his/her research within the speciality.

Please find below a letter including all the relevant information on the details of this prize and on the nomination process.

UEGF will accept self-nominations or nominations through a national society and/or UEGF member society. All nominations must be submitted electronically to the UEGF Secretariat by June 30, 2009 at the latest.

In case you have any further questions, please feel free to contact the UEGF Secretariat at office@uegf.org.

Lesion Recognition System

Formal Assessment in Lesion Recognition at Endoscopy:
Pilot Version Now Live!

This e-learning programme is designed to complement the skills training programmes that have been developed and run throughout the UK as part of the National Endoscopy Training Programme.

It has become apparent that with the move to competence based curricula, lesion recognition, a vital part of endoscopy, had not been formally addressed. This programme, a joint venture of the BSG and the JAG (funded by the BSG) gives trainee endoscopists the opportunity to test their lesion recognition skills, and related endoscopic / gastroenterological knowledge.

(Note: this is a pilot version of the site, with one assessment available at present. This assessment comprises 10 questions (most with several parts each) and a pass rate of 70%. Your feedback on this pilot version is very welcome – please see the Lesion Recognition System website for details.)
