Lesion Recognition System

Formal Assessment in Lesion Recognition at Endoscopy:
Pilot Version Now Live!

This e-learning programme is designed to complement the skills training programmes that have been developed and run throughout the UK as part of the National Endoscopy Training Programme.

It has become apparent that with the move to competence based curricula, lesion recognition, a vital part of endoscopy, had not been formally addressed. This programme, a joint venture of the BSG and the JAG (funded by the BSG) gives trainee endoscopists the opportunity to test their lesion recognition skills, and related endoscopic / gastroenterological knowledge.

(Note: this is a pilot version of the site, with one assessment available at present. This assessment comprises 10 questions (most with several parts each) and a pass rate of 70%. Your feedback on this pilot version is very welcome – please see the Lesion Recognition System website for details.)

UK Endoscopic Ultrasound Census

The BSG has formed a Working Group to advise on the future of EUS services within the UK. We are trying to establish a picture of how many units offer EUS and what services they provide.

We would be grateful if you could send the details of your EUS provider, your hospital name, town, and a suitable contact telephone number in an email to john.meenan@gstt.nhs.uk. If you refer cases to several centres, please give all names.

With many thanks,

Dr John Meenan / Dr Ian Penman Co-Chairs, EUS Working Group

BSG Working Party Consensus on Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Endoscopy (2008): An Interim Statement

All endoscopists will be aware of the current controversy and differing guidelines on endocarditis prophylaxis for GI procedures. A working group of the BSG Endoscopy Committee met in March 2006 to revise the 2001 guidance.

NICE has now considered this issue as well. It has come out against the use of antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent endocarditis during gastrointestinal endoscopy. Its guidance on endocarditis prophylaxis was unveiled on 26 March 2008:

The BSG guidance is to be updated yet again in the light of the NICE guidance, and then resubmitted to Gut for further peer review. The recommendation is likely to be that routine antibiotic prophylaxis is indicated in the following circumstances only:

  • Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (and equivalent procedures)
  • ERCP (if pancreatic pseudocyst, or if unliklely/unable to achieve complete biliary decompression)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound-guided drainage of pancreatic pseudocyst
