Midland Gastroenterological Society

The Midland Gastroenterological Society (MGS) is a large specialist society spanning two Regional and Strategic Authorities, from Hereford in the south-west, through Birmingham to Nottingham and Derby in the north-east. Meetings are held twice a year in May and November, and original research and audit data are presented in oral plenary style and poster presentations. The society encompasses all Gastroenterological specialties including Gastroenterology, Gastroenterological Surgery, Radiology, Pathology, and the Midland Gastroenterological Nursing Society. We are keen for Specialist Trainees to join the society. Prizes are awarded for the best oral and poster presentations. The May meeting includes an invited National or International speaker. For the November meeting applications are invited for the MGS research prize presentation.

The MGS is closely affiliated with the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG). Along with the BSG, the MGS sponsor one of three Advanced International Endoscopy fellowships in Japan under the Directorship of Dr Takahisa Matsuda, National Cancer Centre, Tokyo. Consultant members of the Society are welcome to apply to the MGS for the fellowship. For trainees, the MGS sponsors small research grants of £1,000 and applications are welcome. Further information is attached to this web-page.

MGS Study Grant Applications 2016

The MGS invites applicants for a study grant for 2016. The awards are open to both consultant and trainees, who are undertaking research (but not necessarily in a research post). Each award will go through a process of external rigorous peer-review and will be up to the value of £2500. These awards are designed to assist the recipient in funding an integral part of research projects.

Applications should take the form of a description of the research study which is being undertaken. Details of the institution where the study will be carried out and the use to which the grant will be hosted should be included. Applications should be less than 1000 words in length.

Recipients of these awards will be expected to give a formal presentation of their work at a meeting of the MGS. The awards will be available as a first source of call for funding and will not be dependent upon applicants having obtained funds from elsewhere beforehand. However, the Committee is likely to take into account the feasibility of the research proposal and the availability of funds from other sources when making its decision.

These awards are open to any researcher nationally but relevance of the project to patient care in the Midlands region will be taken into account in the review process.
