  • In Memoriam

    Richard Driscoll

    1950 - 2017

It is with great regret and sadness that I have to inform you of the untimely passing of our friend and colleague Richard Driscoll. Richard passed away on Saturday 21st October following a cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife Aviva, sons Adam, Sam and Johnny and by three grandchildren. They and his wider family, friends and colleagues have our sincerest condolences.

Many of us in the gastroenterology community will have met, interacted with or worked closely with Richard. He led what was then called the National Association for Crohn's and Colitis (now Crohn's and Colitis UK) as CEO and since then has been an independent healthcare consultant on projects like the IBD Registry as Director of Development. He had served as a Trustee of the BSG and made a huge impact on the specialty.

Richard was a hugely engaging, warm and insightful individual who worked tirelessly on whatever cause or project he was engaged in. His impact on patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease has been enormous and will continue to be felt for years to come. Most of all Richard was a great human being who placed his family, community, friends and colleagues before anything. I'm sure many of us have a very positive memory of an interaction with Richard, be it large or small. He will be sorely missed.

Please visit www.richarddriscoll.memorial for funeral details and to leave a message.

Richard Gardner, CEO, British Society of Gastroenterology

  • BSG Strategy: 2016 - 2021

This document is intended to provide an overview of the strategic approach the BSG will take to its purpose and activities. It is intended to be a high level document to support its members, leadership and staff to meet the charity's objectives.

The overarching strategy is intended to tie together and support more detailed strategic plans and specific activity in a range of key areas identified. It is not a static document and will be reviewed regularly to ensure it meets its original objectives and reflects the views of patients, members and Trustees.

A one, three and five year approach is taken in identifying strategic objectives and the strategy will be reviewed annually by the BSG Trustees and Executive, and in consultation with the membership through Council as well as wider engagement activity.

Please find below a one page summary, the full document can be found by logging in to the Members' area.

  • Symptoms following pelvic radiotherapy

For as many as 500,000 people the end of their cancer treatment doesn't mean the end of their cancer journey, with around 90,000 people experiencing chronic changes in lower gastrointestinal function including diarrhoea, faecal incontinence, urgency, flatulence, bleeding, hernia, adhesions, strictures, pain and fistula. BSG and Macmillan are working together to ensure those involved in the potential treatment and care of people with these issues are equipped with the relevant resources and information to support their patients. Macmillan are also working to empower patients to raise these often debilitating and embarrassing issues with health care professionals.

    BSG Annual Report 2016

We are delighted to present the 2015-2016 BSG Annual Review – the first we have published for some five years – as an illustration of the range of activities that the Society undertakes on your behalf. It has always seemed to us that one of the greatest attractions of gastroenterology as a specialty is its sheer breadth. Some of what we do will be familiar but certainly one of our aims is to showcase some of the less well-known areas of our activity.
